Adult colouring books are taking the world’s bookshelves by storm, in much the same way as the loom band phenomenon took over the playground last summer. There are many reasons as to why the colouring-between-the-lines activity is so popular; it brings with it feelings of nostalgia – as children, we were always happy when we were colouring in. It is also less daunting than starting a picture from scratch; instead, we are adding colour to an existing picture to make it better. And the feeling you get once you’ve completed one is that of immense satisfaction. But, particularly for adults, there’s another advantage to come from immersing yourself in the world of colour: it is hugely relaxing. According to statistics from the Mental Health Foundation, almost six in ten UK adults admit to being more stressed today compared to five years ago.
