General searching tips

Titles, authors, ISBNs and keywords associated with a book can be searched for in the quick search box at the top of each page. You narrow this search to a particular product category with the drop-down menu.

The Advanced Book search enables you to search by specific attributes of a book. By entering terms in several fields you further narrow the search. For instance, if you search on Title “To Kill a Mockingbird” and Publisher “Letts” you will return revision notes for the classic. If you do not complete the publisher field your search would find the original and the study texts. If you are unsure how to spell a title of name enter the start of the word and then an asterisk (e.g. “Solz*” for author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn).

The Advanced Book search also enables you to limit your search by format (hardback, paperback, audio book or map).

Once your search has returned a list of books you can further narrow the search by sub-category or price band with the links on the left hand side of the page. The list of books will be ordered by their relevance to the terms you searched upon. You can order this list to be ranked by bestsellers, alphabetically by title or author, publishing date or price by using the drop-down menu at the top of the page.

Title, Series and Keyword Searches

On the Advanced Book search page, enter the Book’s title. If you do not know the full title you can enter keywords, for instance for The Chronicles of Narnia search on “Narnia”.

A book series may be the Famous Five, Doctor Who or The Lord of the Rings. If this does not return all the books you require start a new search this time by searching on the series name in the Title box.

Author and Narrator Searches

On the Advanced Book search page, enter the Author’s name. If you are looking for a book by Charles Dickens, it does not matter if you enter “Charles Dickens” or “Dickens, Charles”. The word “Dickens” should be enough if combined with keywords from the title. Completing the Author / Narrator field and leaving the other fields blank will return a complete list of books by your chosen author.

If you are looking for co-authors simply search on both names. If you do not know the spelling of the author’s name type the start then an asterisk. For instance, to search for Solzhenitsyn type “Solz*”.

Entering in the Author / Narrator field will also return Narrators of audio books. To return just Audio Books tick the Audio Books box.

ISBN and Publisher Searches

On the Advanced Book search page you can search by ISBN. Every book is identified by a unique 10 or 13 digit code – its International Standard Book Number. There is no need to complete any other fields if you know the ISBN of the book you are looking for.

On the Advanced Book search page you can search by Publisher. To maximise your chances of finding books by the appropriate Publisher search on the first name of the publisher, for instance entering “Oxford” will return titles from the Oxford University Press.

Audio Book Searches

On the Advanced Book search page, to narrow your search to just return talking books on CD and cassette simply tick the Audio Books box. Anything entering in the Author / Narrator field will then pick up both these contributors. If this does not return the audio book you require search on fewer terms or browse our range of audio books.

Map Searches

On the Advanced Book search page, to narrow your search to just return maps and map books simply tick the box. For instance, for maps of London search on “London” in the Title field and tick the Map format box. For an Ordnance Survey Explorer map of the Peak District enter “Peak District” in the Title field, “Ordnance Survey” in the Publisher field and “Explorer” in the Series field. If this does not return the map you require search on fewer terms or browse our range of maps and travel books.
