'A Child Called It' Description

Dave Pelzer was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother, a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games ' games that left one of her three sons nearly dead. She no longer considered Dave a son, but a slave; no longer a boy, but an 'it'. His bed was an old army cot in the basement, his clothes were torn and smelly, and when he was allowed the luxury of food it was scraps from the dog's bowl. The outside world knew nothing of the nightmare played out behind closed doors. But throughout Dave kept alive dreams of finding a family to love him. This book covers the early years of his life and is an affecting an inspirational book of the horrors of child abuse and the steadfast determination of one child to survive.

A child called it: One child’s courage to survive by Dave Pelzer A child called it is a million-selling, New York Times number 1 best seller. This is the authors heart rending past of abuse, starvation and neglect from his emotionally unstable mother. This is a true story that will make you think about all the abuse that goes on in the world without anyone knowing it can bring a tear to your eye and leave you speechless. All Dave wanted growing up was to be accepted by people, to be free and most of all to have a family who loved him, care for him and to call him their son. Quote ‘I whispered …. ‘And deliver me from evil’ ‘amen’. This is one of the many cries for help and prayers to god that Dave makes. Evil meaning his mother. It is one of his moments of weakness where he just wants everything to come to an end. On the book cover it has ‘one child’s courage to survive’ to do this Dave had to learn how to play his mothers estranged twisted games. After many years of struggle, deprivation and despair Dave’s dream came true when he had a family of his own who accepted and loved him. Dave Pelzer in the book describes his life as a paradox as without the abuse he suffered he may not be who he is now or even still be here today. But most importantly have a loving relationship with his son who loves him. He says ‘I am very fortunate to turn tragedy into triumph’. I would say the target audience for this book would be 15 years onwards as it has some harsh truths about what goes on in the world. There are two books following this: The lost boy and A man called Dave so you may like to check these books out as well as A child called it.
