The success of Filofax over the past decade has led many to believe that they are a new concept. However, quite the contrary, in fact its origins date back right up until the First World War when an Englishman working in the USA came across an American organising system consisting largely of technical leaves for engineers and scientists.
In 1930 after a company was set up in London, to market the idea of personal organisation systems by mail order to England, the name “Filofax” was born, having derived from the description “file of facts”.
Filofax built up a strong clientele particularly amongst the clergy and military, indeed at one point a “Filofax” was a compulsory purchase of the British Army staff college in Camberley.
The Filofax personal organiser was an indispensable status symbol for the 1980’s and continues to be a valuable and practical asset to people in all walks of life today.
