This book had me hooked from chapter one right to the end. It made me laugh and it made me cry. By the end I felt like I know all the characters personally and could imagine myself flying with them. The descriptions of the flying were amazing and the descriptions of the crews emotions made me sweat. I felt tension before they took off on a mission, fear and excitment over the target and relief when they got back. You can't ask more of a novel than that. I can't wait for Tom Atkins to write another book.

This book is so well written I felt like I could get into a Lancaster and fly it. I particularly liked the way the story turned full circle as the new crew gradually became more experienced and you saw them transform into the sort of "old hand" crew that they met when they first arrived at their flying Station. This book really makes you see how a mixture of stress, fear, hardship and wit bond people together in a comradeship which civilians can never really understand.

I had this book bought for me and thought I would be disapointed because I usually read non fiction but I read it because I like the subject and I loved it. The story is completely believeable and the detail is facinating. Unlike much fiction it is not full of heroes, just ordinary people doing their best and you really feel for them. I have served in the armed forces and you can certainly tell that the author has too because he has captured the characters and banter perfectly. I am not converted to fiction but I will certainly be looking out for Tom Akins next book.
