In this black satire, Nick Brooke brings a touch of Tom Sharpe to his first novel as 'Chav' lottery winner, AJ, arrives in a secluded close and upsets the fragile balance between his five new neighbors. From the initially friendly Christian family to the downright hostile Major, AJ faces a battle that he takes up with a will. Ambitious Kathi, 'artist' Ralph, and rich boy Jack make up the other residents - Ralph's alliance with the Major in particular leads him into catastrophic and hilarious situations. The characters dance around preconceived prejudices often with bellyaching hilarity mixed with a tender poignancy as relationships ebb and flow. The dogs also have their day as AJ's enormous and illegal Viera and the Major's Yorkie, Betsy, come to grips with the action; eagerly, hopefully and always disastrously trying to do their best to please the leaders of their packs!
