The success of Filofax over the past decade has led many to believe that they are a new concept. This is, actually, quite the contrary - in fact its origins date back to the First World War when an Englishman, working in the USA, came across an American organising system consisting largely of technical leaves for engineers and scientists.
In 1930, a company was set up in London to market the idea of personal organisation systems - by mail order - to England. The name “Filofax” was born, having derived from the description “file of facts”.
Filofax built up a strong clientele particularly amongst the clergy and military; indeed, at one point, a “Filofax” was a compulsory purchase for the British Army staff college in Camberley.
The Filofax personal organiser was an indispensable status symbol for the 1980’s and continues to be a valuable and practical asset to people in all walks of life today.
