Celandine; another triumph for Steve Augarde. The cleverly-written prequel to The Various was a long time coming, but well worth the wait. With itâs parallel storylines set in Somerset in 1915, the reader joins the hunting warriors of the Ickri, (a tribe of The Various), on their perilous journey through the land of the Gorji, (humans), in search of their homeland and at the same time experiences Celandineâs trials and tribulations, both at home and at boarding school, leading to her discovery of the shy and peaceful Various and her eventual acceptance by them. Everything is drawn together well at the end of the book when they are all brought together and their lives seem to be destined to change forever. With frequent âflashbacksâ and links to incidents and characters in The Various, I was intrigued by the connection between the events in 1915, (Celandine) and the present day, (The Various). Canât wait for the third book when, hopefully, all will be revealed. All the characters are really well developed and spring to life from the pages; I feel that I know them all personally! A great book in a great series, for readers of all ages. Highly recommended, pure escapism! These books must eventually attract the fantasy film makers. Take note Peter Jackson!
