Payment

You will not be charged until each item you order is ready for dispatch. This payment can by credit or debit card.

Before confirming your order we carry out a standard pre-authorisation check on your payment card to ensure there are sufficient funds in order to fulfill the transaction.

No payment is debited from your card during this pre-authorisation check however funds will be reserved in your account.

Your card will only be charged at the point that your order is being prepared for dispatch.

For technical reasons if your order contains products supplied via both WHSmith Jersey and WHSmith UK the pre-authorisation process will reserve the postage and packaging costs twice. Please rest assured that we will only charge the postage and packing costs once.

Payment Options

Once you are ready to place your order you can select from the following payment cards - Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Switch, Maestro, Delta, JCB and Diner’s Club cards.

Once you have entered your payment details through our secure server, you will not need to give them to us again. Subsequent orders can be placed by logging in using your email address and password.

After creating an account you can manage your payment options by storing several different cards from which you can choose at the point of placing an order.

All prices given on each product display page are in UK pounds sterling (£). The total for your order including P&P will be shown in UK Pounds Sterling on the Review & Place Your Order page.

Transactions will show on your card statement as being made by WHSmith Retail Ltd or WHSmith Jersey Ltd. All transactions are carried out in Pounds Sterling.

When you sign into the Checkout you enter a secure part of our website. You will see a closed padlock or unbroken key icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen; this confirms that information you submit will be transferred in a secure format.

Payment Problems

Once you have submitted an order we will immediately pre-authorise your payment details prior to your order being confirmed: this will reserve funds to pay for your order at the point of dispatch.

Should your bank decline the pre-authorisation your order will not be accepted and we will prompt you to take the relevant remedial action.

Should we be unable to debit payment at the point when we are ready to dispatch your order, for example your card has expired between the point of ordering and the point of dispatch, you will receive an email stating that you will need to update your payment details, and that your order will stay open for 7 days.

Once you have updated your card details we will automatically attempt to charge your card. If after 7 days we have not been able to secure payment your order will be cancelled.

Please note that only your card issuer will be able to tell you why your card has been declined.

To update your payment details please follow the steps below:

  • Go to "My Account"
  • Log in and access ‘My Profile’ where you can edit your payment details and relevant billing address
  • Check that the card details that you currently have allocated for your order are correct, or enter a new payment card and billing address
  • Once your details have been updated we will automatically try to charge your account again
