Richard's Review

Richard's Review:

The contrast between Travis Devine’s old life and new could hardly be starker. At thirty-two, Devine is a battle-hardened veteran, a survivor of brutal combat missions in both Afghanistan and Iraq. He has a chest-full of medals to prove it – so why did he suddenly quit the Army in mysterious circumstances?

Now, Devine’s life runs along smoother tracks – literally. Every morning, he catches the 6:20 commuter train into the heart of New York’s own battleground: the financial district. Now he fights with figures as a top analyst at Cowl and Comely, a ruthless investment bank that expects almost fanatical devotion from its employees.

But Devine is increasingly distracted. His daily journey takes him past a millionaire’s mansion where he fleetingly sees something that his military training and instincts tells him is all wrong. And what does our ex-soldier do?

Walk straight into the danger zone.

Judy's Review:

Is there a connection between what Devine has seen from his train, and what is happening at the bank? A close friend there, Sara Ewes, is found dead on the fifty second floor. She has – apparently - taken her own life. But why? And who sent the anonymous, cryptic message ‘She is dead’ to Devine’s personal email account?

Could it be something to do with mysterious fifty first floor just below, a level known amongst employees as ‘Area 51’. No one knows anyone who has access to it and the building’s express elevator never stops there. Ewes was briefly Devine’s lover and he feels compelled to dig deeper. Soon he uncovers bizarre coincidences and unsettling truths. There are more deaths. Will he be among them?

A cracking thriller and another guaranteed bestseller from Baldacci.
