Description
Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a powerful and brave YA novel about prejudice in the 21st century. The Hate U Give tells the story of sixteen-year-old Starr Carter who is juggling two worlds. She was born and raised in a poor neighbourhood but attends a posh high school in the suburbs. An ordinary girl, her world is turned upside down when she witnesses the fatal and unlawful shooting of her best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Khalil's death makes the national news and being the only witness, she is left to defend his name, but not without putting herself in danger.
A compelling and poignant read, The Hate U Give will both warm and break your heart at the same time. Read on to find out more about the inspiration behind the character of Khalil from Angie Thomas herself. You can also take a sneak peek at the first chapter of The Hate U Give as we're introduced to Starr and Khalil.
In the first chapter of The Hate U Give, we are introduced to Khalil just as Starr is reunited with him for the first time in months. Going into this story, I knew I'd have only a short amount of time to write this character and hopefully give some insight into his hopes, dreams, and reality. I also knew that this short window could either make or break any empathy the reader formed for this young man. Though we don't see Khalil himself much throughout the book, he is one of my favourite characters by far. His love for his grandmother, little brother, his mother, and Starr consume his entire heart. He has a great sense of humour, though he can definitely be stubborn, and he only wants to do right. Unfortunately, the cards he has been dealt in life do not work in his favour. Growing up, he witnessed his mother slowly diminish due to the stronghold of drug addiction, and it forced him to grow up and take on the role of the man of his home. I know many Khalils, and I wrote this character as an ode to them. His life mattered, and theirs do too. - Angie Thomas
