As one of the world’s oldest retailers, we’ve had some pretty amazing anniversaries to celebrate in our time, but our 225th anniversary in 2017 has to be one of the most special. This year we have lots of activities planned, from raising money for three staff-chosen charities to reflecting on some of the key milestones in our history. But as proud booksellers with a rich history in bringing quality books to readers, we couldn’t let our anniversary pass by without a chance to get people talking about some of the best books of the past 225 years.

The vote saw some fantastic nominations including the likes of Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, George Orwell and the Bronte sisters, but the title that stole the hearts of the nation the most was Rebecca. First published in 1938, Rebecca was Daphne du Maurier’s most successful book and in just under 80 years it has never gone out of print! Although considered a romance at the time, today it’s more widely classed as gothic literature or a psychological thriller.

We’ve been asking our friends on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all about their favourite children’s books of the past 225 years using the hashtag #WHS225KidsBooks as a way of celebrating the successes of both books and our business over the past years. Some chose books that they still remember falling in love with as a child, others picked books that they’ve loved reading with their own little ones. Either way, the recommendations have been both wonderful and responsible for our to-be-read list being twice the size it was before this all began.

If you haven’t been keeping up with all the fun on our channels, then take a look at the books some of our author friends chose as their favourites over on our blog. And if none of them picked your favourite, then make sure you use the hashtag #WHS225KidsBooks to let us know.
