This true-life dog biography set in the late 1970s/80s on two outlying Shropshire farms, relating the compelling thirteen year long bond between a young woman and her Labrador dog, is delightfully different by way that it is told from the dog's quirky and imaginative point of view, which makes it thoroughly entertaining and humorous throughout. The story opens when Fan, with her ingenious, resourceful mind, begins a new life at Woodlands Farm. She and her new owner, a somewhat unconventional woman herself, are undeniably fashioned for each other, both being strong-willed characters determined to have the last say, when life throws up many challenges and hardships which they face together, besides all the good times and laughter they share. This appealing story becomes sad and poignant when Fan reaches the end of her life, although has a heart-warming and most unexpected ending.
