This memoir is the story of how a girl worked to create a new self, one able to emerge from a troubled background into a state of ordinary everyday happiness.
Born into a working class family, Joan Bliss grew up in London during the Blitz. Obliged to leave school at the age of sixteen, she abandoned post-war England for the Continent. Having travelled around Europe, scraping a living from part-time jobs, she qualified for University, going on to study and work for a decade with Jean Piaget in Geneva. In 1971 she returned to an academic post in psychology in the UK. She has made BBC films on Child Development and worked for the Overseas Development Agency in Sri Lanka and India and for UNESCO in Thailand. She recently retired as Professor and Dean at a British university. She is married with three step-children.
