The author volunteered for the army in August 1914 and the first two chapters of his book give an almost day to day account of his adventures as a private in the trenches. He was introduced to warfare and trained as a Lewis gunner before the battle of Loos. He took part in the battle itself and in the heavy fighting afterwards. In 1916 he was sent to Blighty for an appendix operation and after training he became a Second Lieutenant. In a third chapter he describes how he cut his teeth as an officer in Palestine and returned to France in May1918 for more heavy fighting. In September 1918 he was severely wounded in an action for which he was awarded the Military Cross. Finally, his letter home concerning this action is followed by a dozen of his poems which reveal some of his feelings at the time. The book would be of particular interest to historians and to school children studying the Great War 1914 - 1918.
