About Author

Wilcomb E. Washburn (1925-1997) was Senior Historian Emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution where he held a number of positions from 1958 to 1997. He directed a graduate program in American Material Culture. He has edited numerous books on Native American,s including the Cambridge History of the Native Peoples of North America and The History of Indian-White Relations Volume 4 in the twenty-volume Smithsonian Handbook of North American Indians.
