Description

Peter Russell - disciple of Ezra Pound wrote the poetic dialogue "Agamemnon in Hades" during the Easterdays of 1962, a time of crisis in the life of the poet. This study is an in-depth examination of a single volume of Russell's poetry and shows how the poet, while recounting the story of Agamemnon and his daughter Iphigenia, adds his own interpretation of the tragic events; and through a Jungian interpretation of the myths renders them both historical and contemporary, whereby the poet himself appears as an Agamemnon figure. The book investigates Latin and Greek literature and mythology in detail to establish the material with which the poet was working and presents the poet's philosophy of life as seen in the poetic dialogue and other poems.
