This book of nearly 200 photographs illustrates the recent history of the neighbouring communities of Hindley and Abram. The photographs cover a period from the mid-nineteenth century to the postwar decades and show some of the great changes that have occurred over this relatively short period of time. They show how the area changed rapidly from being a largely agricultural community to a highly industrialised one, with the advent of coal mining and cotton manufacture, and then lost it all again. So complete was this loss that barely a trace of these activities remains today, except in the memories of an older generation who depended on them for their livelihood. The illustrations show all the features of an age gone by; from tram, steam trains, horse-drawn vehicles, corner shops, schools, churches, pubs and a host of people who worked in them and with them, to steam trains, and the people who worked with them. This book will be a nostalgic trip for many and an eye-opener for a younger generation and newcomers to the area. The photographs have been selected mainly from the archives of Wigan heritage Services which have , over the years, acquired much of the local material that was used in this book, as loans or donations, from the people who live in Hindley and Abram.
