In the late 19th century, due to the agricultural depression, farmland in several parts of Essex was divided into small plots and sold by auction. Mainly bought by Londoners, the plotlands sadly no longer exist, having been absorbed into Basildon New Town. This fascinating book traces the 'plotlanders' story from the 1890s to the 1990s. "... fascinating narrative with a superb collection of illustrations ..." Yellow Advertiser
Peter Jackson's family was closely involved with three plotland properties from the 1930s. They were permanent residents during the war and, again, from the later 1950s. Peter is a retired school teacher and creator of the website for the Dunton Plotland. Deanna Walker's family regularly escaped from Dagenham to their place in the country in the 1970s. She described the experience in Basildon Plotlands and has continued to research the area, teaching day schools on the subject for the Workers Educational Association. She works at the University of Essex.
