Description

This book is not only the first annotated edition of the play, "El gobernador prudente", by Gaspar de Avila, it is the third, and last, play on the deeds of Don Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, governor of Chile from 1557 to 1561. "El gobernador prudente" by Gaspar de Avila is the third, and last, play on the deeds of Don GarcIa Hurtado de Mendoza, governor of Chile from 1557 to 1561. The other plays, "Algunas hazanas de las muchas de don Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza", "Mar ques de Canete", by nine authors (1613) and "Arauco domado", by Lope de Vega (1625), enjoyed critical acclaim in their time and have been studied at length by Golden Age scholars. Because "El gobernador prudente" was published in 1663, it escaped the interest of researchers for over two centuries. What separates this play from the others is that it deals in depth with the justification of the right of Spain to the American territories, an issue which led to the creation of international law. This book is not only the first annotated edition of the play, but one that makes an important contribution to our understanding of colonial literature.
