DescriptionThis is a pioneering study offering stimulating new insights into the Portuguese electoral process. It examines the congruence between the preferences of the electorate and of the Portuguese parliamentarians in relation to a wide range of matters including public policy, ideology, European integration and institutional reform. The many studies presented in this book are pioneering in Portugal and, we hope will encourage the establishment of a new line of political representation studies. In order to examine the congruence between the preferences of the electorate and of the Portuguese parliamentarians in relation to a wide range of matters (preferences on matters of public policy, ideology, institution reform, European integration, participation in social pressure groups, democratic deliberation, etc.) in the project underlying this book we make use of two surveys conducted during 2008: of deputies in the Assembly of the Republic and of Portuguese voters. The survey of the electorate was based on a probabilistic multi-stage sample of Portuguese citizens aged 18 and over and resident in continental Portugal (N=1350). The fieldwork was conducted by TNS-Portugal under the scientific direction of the project team. The MP survey (N-143 out of 230) fieldwork was directly conducted by the research team.
