About Author

Ayako Brodek's love of origami started when she was a little girl. On long ferryboat rides to her grandparents' home in Shikoku, her mother made origami cranes and boats from candy wrappers to chase away the boredom. Her fascination with origami continued, and after thirty years of folding for personal enjoyments she founded OriCraft to introduce her origami creations to a wider audience. Her focus is on designing origami works of art that can be loved and used in everyday life. Wearable origami is one of her biggest passions, and she has devoted considerable time to exploring ways to transform origami objects into exquisite and durable jewellery. She sells her work at art and craft shows and through her website. She also teaches origami to all ages at local libraries and schools. Shannon Voigt has always had a passion for creating since she was young and is self-taught in many disciplines including cake decorating, quilting, crocheting/knitting, cross-stitch, and of course quilling. She picked the skill back up in 2008 and started selling quilled snowflakes in her Etsy shop, ForeverFiligree. Her snowflakes have sold all around the world and were used in Jockey International's 2011 Holiday Catalog and Sundance's 2012 Holiday Catalog. This is her first book.

SECTION ONE / THE SELECTOR (14 pp) * Choose your favourite from an array of beautiful designs using a combination of origami, kirigami, and quilling styles, organised in pleasing colours and designed to encourage browsing. * Each design is tagged with a skill level and cross reference to the relevant instruction page. SECTION TWO / CORE TECHNIQUES (12pp) This section covers the essential knowledge and core techniques for origami, kirigami, and quilling. Clearly demonstrated with step-by-step photographs and text instructions, creating a thorough grounding in the craft for beginners and a useful reference manual for the experienced. Origami * Choosing paper: types of paper; which paper is suitable and which is not; how paper choice changes the look of the finished piece. * Basic folds and bases: basic origami folding techniques, terminologies, and bases necessary to make the designs introduced in this book. Folding techniques will be shown with step-by-step photographic instructions with added lines/arrows and text. Quilling * Pre-cut paper strips: thickness, width, gilded edges. * Tools: slotted or needle quilling tool, scissors, cutting knife, pins, fine-tip glue, cork board with multiple circumferences, tweezers, clear acrylic spray. * Basic techniques: how to quill basic shapes; tracing on top of templates; applying glue. Kirigami * Choosing paper and tools: paper choice and how it affects the look; recommended cutting tools (scissors, cutting knife), needle, and other helpful tools. * Basic techniques: how to make the folded bases for both rectangular paper and square paper (Japanese traditional kirigami uses square sheets); how to use the templates; cutting techniques. SECTION THREE / DESIGNS (94pp) The designs showcased in the Selector are organized into quilling, origami, and kirigami styles, with detailed instructions, helpful hints, templates for kirigami and quilling, and beautiful photographs of finished pieces in different paper choices. There are twenty five projects for each style, sub-divided into designs for snowflakes, sunbursts, and stars in harmonious colors. Quilling (15 SNOWFLAKES, 5 STARS, 5 SUNBURSTS) * Initial basic quilled shapes form simple snowflakes, stars, and sunbursts that are ideal for beginners. Quick enough for experienced users to make for larger events. * Also includes more intricate patterns, suited to both beginner and intermediate quillers who would like to spend more time per project. * Open quilled shapes define a shape's faceting with negative rather than positive space. They are more delicate to handle yet more graphic to behold, these deisgns are a challenge for quillers who want to use less common shapes to form their patterns. Origami (12 SNOWFLAKES, 8 STARS, 5 SUNBURSTS) * The designs shown first are simple ones; a great start for beginners, but also a satisfyingly beautiful and simple project for the experienced. * The designs shown next are more elaborate and complex, but not only for the experienced: some designs are modular models composed of multiple pieces of simple folds. Kirigami (13 SNOWFLAKES, 6 STARS, 6 SUNBURSTS) Ever since science revealed the intricate, symmetrical patterns of snowflakes, this aspect of nature's beauty has fascinated many artists around the world and kirigami is a great medium for creating graphic shapes. This section also details kirigami designs for equally stunning sunbursts and stars. SECTION FOUR / CRAFT PROJECTS (14 pp) Each craft project includes beautifully photographed finished works, a list of supplies, and detailed instructions. These projects showcase some of the designs featured in Section Three. The reader can alternate them with other snowflakes, stars, or sunbursts featured in the book. * Stringing-Readers can use strings or ribbons to turn their crafted shapes into gift tags, gift toppers, napkin rings, garlands, and more. Includes instructions on how to attach string/ribbon and how to add embellishments. (Origami, kirigami, and quilling) * Pasting-Snowflakes are perfect for seasonal greeting cards, these designs are beautiful and far from ordinary. Also includes unique ways to paste sunbursts, snowflakes, or stars to other materials or objects, such as fabric star appliques on a canvas bag, silhouettes on a lantern revealing symmetrical shapes and layers, decoupage on a glass, and more. (Origami, kirigami, and quilling) * Stencil-If you cut out the paper carefully, it can be a great stencil template. (Kirigami) * Wearing-The perfect way to show off your creations! Paper earrings are so kind to your ears because of their light weight. Includes instructions on coating for durability, and attaching findings and embellishments.
