He spent his childhood drawing, whittling, throwing dirt clods at his cousins, watching countless hours of monster movies and cartoons, and reading comic books. In high school, he developed an interest in graphic design and music (namely, the banjo), and after graduation earned a degree at a local art school. In addition to teaching at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design for several years, Russ worked for various design and advertising agencies before opening his own studio, Smiling Otis Studio, where he currently specializes in illustration for the children's book market. He, his wife, and their four yodeling cats live in Pittsfield, Maine.
