These 16 sermons, made available here in English for the first time, on the "Book of Colossians" preached by the theologian and pastor Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834), provide an instructive insight into his thought and work. The experiential elements of this particular book of the bible are central for understanding Schleiermacher's explication of Christianity. Added to the translated material is an extended monograph which provides an historical background to Schleiermacher' s homiletical work, his understanding of hermeneutics, as well a systematic analysis of the Colossian sermons and Schleiermacher's dogmatic material. The monograph demonstrates that Schleiermacher's sermons are a necessary complement for understanding his academic theology and his theory of religious language, and these particular sermons enhance and clarify his theological formulations in the areas of Christology and the nature of redemption, areas that represent his most innovative and unique approach to the Christian faith. This work will appeal to Schleiermacher scholars as well as laypeople, pastors and theologians.
