By: David Taylor (author)Paperback
2 - 4 weeks availability
This is the last in Mike Taylor's three-volume history covering the craft of the Humber's inland waterways. Volume one dealt with tugs and towing barges; volume two with tankers; and this book tells the story of the dry cargo barges that plied the waters from the early days in the seventeenth century, through their flourishing heyday, to the gradual decline in the twentieth century after the railways and roads took prominence. A wealth of illustrations have been gathered together here to chart the development of dry cargo-carrying craft from unpowered to the later self-propelled and push-towed vessels, covering keels, sloops, pull-towed and motorised dumb barges.
Mike Taylor is an expert on the craft and history of the Humber waterways and an avid canal historian. This is his seventh book for Tempus; he lives in Derbyshire.
