This volume offers an understanding of Asia in the new millennium - the nature of its politics and governance, the reasons for its insecurity, its intrinsic strengths and weaknesses, the available policy options, and the role of India as a key player. Among the many issues discussed are: new foreign policy options available to India; the security configurations that may emerge in the Asia-Pacific region and their implications for India; Pakistan's strategic policies; the United States' strategy of cultivating relations with Japan, China and India to prevent the rise of anti-American power; the positive role of China, India and Iran in ensuring stability in Central Asia; the need for the Asian states to guarantee equity and justice for women; and the need for India to forge economic ties with Afghanistan and the Central Asian region.
R R Sharma is the former Dean, School of International Studies and Professor of Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He earlier served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu (1996-2002). Professor Sharma has authored or edited a number of books including Marxist Model of Social Change: A Study of Soviet Central Asia (1979), The USSR in Transition: Issues and Themes (1985), Asian Dimension of Soviet Policy (edited, 1986), New Contours of Soviet Foreign Policy (editor, 1989), Economic Reforms, Liberalization and Structural Change-India and Hungary (edited, 1997) and Reform, Conflict and Change in the CIS and East Europe (edited, 1999). He is currently co-editing a volume on Globalisation and Transnational Conflicts, which will be published in early 2006 by Sage, London.
