The topic of the internal spin structure of the nucleon has become an unusually active subfield of particle and nuclear physics, together with the relevant technologies. This volume presents up-to-date coverage of the topic. All the talks given at the symposium can be found in the volume. In addition, selected articles are reprinted, including two early papers which record initial thinking about the topic, all experimental papers giving data on nucleon spin structure functions determined from polarized lepton-nucleon scattering, and two previously unpublished papers.
Previous experiments on polarized structure functions, V.W. Hughes; measurements of spin-dependent structure functions of the proton and the deuteron, G.K. Mallot; spin structure measurements at SLAC, J.S. McCarthy; the HERMES experiment, R.G. Milner; neutrino nucleon scattering, G.T. Garvey; QCD, H. Georgi; Q2 dependence of deep inelastic sum rules, X.-D. Ji; baryons in the large Nc limit, A.V. Manohar; the quark spin structure of the nucleon - early history and recent developments, J. Kuti; probing polarized nucleon structure in semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic processes, M. Strikman; the 50 GeV programme at SLAC, C.Y. Prescott; RHIC spin physics, G.M. Bunce; polarized structure functions of the nucleon in the resonance region, V.D. Burkert; structure functions at HERA, F. Sciulli. (Part contents)
