About Author

Professor Friedrich B. Prinz Professor Friedrich B. Prinz is Chair, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Stanford University. Since 1994, he has been the Rodney H. Adams Professor of Engineering, Stanford University, with dual appointments as Professor of the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. From 1994 to 2003, he was Co-Director of the Alliance for Innovative Manufacturing (AIM) at Stanford. Before joining Stanford University in 1994, he had been an academic staff in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, for nearly 14 years, and was Professor there from 1987 to 1994, as well as Director of the Engineering Design Research Center (NSF-ERC) from 1989 to 1994. In his nearly 3 decades of teaching and research, Prof. Prinz has published over 100 papers, among which the very recent ones are of rapid-prototyping and fuel cell studies. Professor Prinz was invited to Sir Christopher Hinton Lecture, Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, in 1991, and awarded Engineer-of-the-Year (1991-1992), American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Pittsburgh, PA Section. In 1996, he was elected Austrian Academy of Science (foreign member), Vienna, Austria. He holds a PhD degree (1975) in Physics from the University of Vienna, and has been active in synergistic activities with organizations like the National Research Council Committees, the Japanese Technology Evaluation Center and World Technology Evaluation Center, as well as Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation. Professor Michael Yu Wang Professor Michael Yu Wang has been with CUHK since 2000 and is the director of Computational Modeling and Design Laboratory. Prior to joining CUHK, he had been with the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Maryland at College Park for ten years, where he was an Associate Professor and the Director of the Manufacturing Automation Laboratory. He received his B.S degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University (China) (1982), M.S. degree in Engineering Mechanics from Pennsylvania State University (1985), and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University (1989). He is the author of 122 technical articles. He has developed 37 research projects supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Boeing, Chrysler, ALCOA, Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) in USA, by RGC and ITC and local industries in Hong Kong, and by NSFC and MOST in China. Professor Wang is currently a Senior Editor of IEEE Trans. on Automation Science and Engineering (2003-) and an Editorial Board member of Assembly Automation Journal. He served as an Guest Editor for IEEE Trans. on Robotics and Automation (2003-2004), and an Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. on Robotics and Automation (1998-2002) and of ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering (1999-2002). He is the Chair of the IEEE RAS Manufacturing Automation Technical Committee. He received a LaRoux K. Gillespie Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from Society of Manufacturing Engineers in 1995. He was awarded the Overseas Young Investigator Collaboration Award from the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) (2002) and The Science and Technology Development Award (Second Class) from The Ministry of Education of China (2004).. Professor Peihua Gu Peihua Gu is currently Department Head and NSERC Chair Professor in Life Cycle Design Engineering in Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Calgary. He is an elected Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering. Dr. Gu was twice awarded Industrial Research Chair by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Dr. Gu was the Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Engineering at the University of Calgary from 1995-1997. He was a recipient of several awards including the 2003 SME University LEAD Award. His current research interests include life cycle design engineering, precision rapid prototyping, and free-form surface inspection. As a Principal Investigator, his research has been funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) through Research Grants, Strategic Grants, CRD Grants, and Industrial Research Chair Grant; Industry Canada (a ministry) through Intelligent Manufacturing Systems; Canada Foundation for Innovation; Research Excellence Envelop Program; and various industrial companies. Dr Gu has published over 150 technical papers and two books with a large number of citations. Peihua Gu currently serves on Advisory Board of Integrated Manufacturing Technology Institute, National Research Council of Canada (NRC). He is currently an Associate Editor for Journal of Manufacturing Systems and Journal of Manufacturing Processes, a member of Editorial Boards for several international journals. He has served on grant selection panels for various agencies including National Science Foundation (US). Dr. Gu is Vice Chair of Executive Committee and Steering Committee of Canadian Design Engineering Network (C-DEN). He is a member of CIRP, SME and ASME. Mrs Ping Fu Ping Fu is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Raindrop Geomagic. Since starting the company in 1996, Fu has led Raindrop Geomagic from an unknown startup to a global industry leader in its market segments. Before starting Raindrop Geomagic, Fu was director of visualization at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, where she initiated and managed the NCSA Mosaic software project that later became Netscape and Internet Explorer. She has more than 20 years of software industry experience in database, networking, reverse engineering, and computer graphics. Fu is a frequent speaker at international design and manufacturing conferences and published more than 40 papers and 2 books. Fu was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003 and was presented the innovator award of the worldwide "Fast 50" by Fast Company in 2004. She holds MS and BS degrees in computer science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of California San Diego, and a postgraduate degree in Chinese literature from Suzhou University China. Fu is an associate professor at computer science Department of Duke University.
