Interventional oncology has emerged as an important specialty within cancer care, providing targeted therapy and palliative benefits without the side effects of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. Covering the principles of current and emerging interventional oncology techniques and detailed diagnosis, staging and treatment algorithms, this book outlines the ways in which these image-guided therapies can inform cancer management strategies. Access to the most current information is vital in this rapidly growing and evolving area of practice. This new edition reflects the most recent clinical data on interventional oncology procedures. Chapters on image guidance and targeting, tumor ablation, embolotherapy, and response assessment have been updated to reflect major technological advances, and new material on microwave ablation and irreversible electroporation has been added. This invaluable resource for interventional radiologists provides essential education and guidance on the full range of minimally invasive image-guided procedures and their integration into comprehensive cancer care.

About Author

Jean-Francois H. Geschwind, MD is the new Chairman of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at Yale University School of Medicine, Radiologist in Chief at Yale-New Haven Hospital and also a Professor of Radiology and Oncology at Yale University School of Medicine. Originally from Paris, Dr Geschwind received his medical degree in 1991 from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his residency training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco and his Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology in 1998 at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he remained on faculty and as the Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology since 2002. Dr Geschwind is recognized as a key expert in the field of liver cancer and he has focused his research on developing new therapies for liver cancer. He is the author or co-author of more than 400 published manuscripts and abstracts, primarily on subjects dealing with liver cancer, and is also the recipient of numerous national and international awards and grants for his research in this field. As lead or co-investigator on more than 50 clinical trials, Dr Geschwind's research has been published in many top peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Radiology, Hepatology, Clinical Cancer Research, Cancer Research and Annals of Surgery. Dr Geschwind serves on the editorial board of many journals and is a consultant to the Editor of Radiology as well as a reviewer for numerous radiology, hepatology and oncology journals. He is the current chairman of the World Conference on Interventional Oncology Board of Directors and is the chair of the Interventional Oncology Lecture Series for the RSNA. He is a Fellow of both the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) and the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE). Michael C. Soulen, MD, received his undergraduate degree from Yale University, Connecticut and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, then trained in radiology at Johns Hopkins University. After clinical and research fellowships in vascular and interventional radiology at Thomas Jefferson University, he started the interventional oncology program at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is currently professor of radiology and surgery. A prolific author and lecturer, Soulen served on the boards of the SIR, SIR Foundation, and the WCIO. He is a Fellow of the SIR and of the CIRSE.
