'The audience must be open to every possible world. The greatness of art equals the distance it has travelled from the artist. All conflict happens along boundaries' from 'Usquebaugh', Howard Wright. "King of Country" is Howard Wright's first, much-anticipated, full-length poetry collection. Wright's keen, painters eye never fails to see the irony in the mundane, rendering found art out of the everyday in this wry and wily collection. Vivid, colourful and original, "King of Country" skilfully strikes the balance between personal experience, local character and universal truths.
HOWARD WRIGHT was born in Portadown, County Armagh in 1959 and is a lecturer in Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Ulster. His poems have previously appeared in two pamphlet collections, Yahoo (1991) and Usquebaugh (1997); the TLS; and in nearly every contemporary literary journal including Poetry Review, the Edindurgh Review and journals in the USA and Canada. In 2003 twelve of Wright's poems also featured in New Soundings: An Anthology of New Writing from the North of Ireland. He won the Frogmore Poetry Prize in 2004 and again in 2009. He also writes essays, short stories and reviews. This is his first full-length poetry collection.
