In this book the editors have sought to celebrate the enormous accomplishments of Lillian H. Smith and to consider the way in which her vision of library work with children has evolved. Miss Smith's philosophy of children and books distinguished her work at the Toronto Public Library and formed the basis of the classic book on children's literature, The Unreluctant Years. Contributors to this volume include Mary Beaty, Margaret Bush, Sheila Egoff, Sarah Ellis, Adele M. Fasick, Monica Hughes, Margaret Johnston, Alice Kane, Marilyn Kaye, Margaret Crawford Maloney, Irma McDonough Milnes, Debora Pearson, and Tim Wynne-Jones.
Margaret Johnston, formerly a children's librarian with the Toronto Public Library, was Coordinator of Boys and Girls Services from 1970 to 1976. Her career has included consultancing and writing for such journals as The Horn Book, In Review, and Canadian Library Journal. Adele M. Fasick is a professor at the Faculty of Library and Information Science, University of Toronto. She has written articles for Canadian Library Journal, Top of the News, and Library Trends, and is co-author of Child View: Evaluating and Reviewing Materials for Children.
