In "Later On" F.T. Prince brings together three contrasting long poems written since 1980: "The Yuan Chen Variations", which are inspired by the Chinese T'ang Dynasty poet Po Chu-i, "His Dog and Pilgrim", an account of the legend of St Rock told from his dog's point of view, and "A Byron-Shelley Conversation". F.T. Prince's "Collected Poems" appeared in 1979. 'There is hardly a single poem in it that is not notable, always for its sheer felicity of verbal cadence, frequently for a memorable, quite personal peculiarity of phrasing, its fresh clarity of vision, its restrained yet poignant expression of emotion', wrote David Gascoyne, while John Ashbery commented that 'Undervalued at home and abroad, F.T. Prince ranks with Auden and Spender as one of the major English poets of his generation'.
F.T. Prince was born in South Africa in 1912. He was educated there and at Oxford and Princeton Universities. During the war he served in Army Intelligence at Bletchley Park and in the Middle East. From 1954 to 1974 he was Professor of English at Southampton University. He has been a Visiting Fellow at All Souls, Oxford, and in 1973 he gave the Clark lectures at Cambridge. More recently he has been in Jamaica as Professor of English at the University of the West Indies, and at Brandeis University in the USA and Sana'a University in the Yemen Arab Republic as Visiting Professor.
