Leadership in Early Childhood is a practical resource for early childhood practitioners who want to understand how to create successful childcare and early education settings. However, leadership in the early years has moved on in the way it is organised since the third edition and therefore this new fourth edition will be fully revised and updated to reflect the changes affecting leaders in early childhood. This rapid change in the field over the past few years includes moves to professionalise the workforce generally and the introduction of EYPS, so it is important that the new edition recognizes the implications of these developments and that some of the concepts and messages are revisited. The third edition was praised for its good overview of early years leadership; its accessible writing style and clear links between theory and practice which are easy for students to identify with. Proposed changes for the fourth edition include: *Discussion of the leader's role in moving towards leading/best practice will be included *Essential characteristics of leadership will be revisited in Ch2 in terms of personal qualities, skills and timing related to effective leadership.
A newer model will replace older models of professional career development *Decision making in Ch7 will be completely revised and probably renamed something like 'From Vision to Action' to discuss developing a vision, the role of values, thinking styles for decision making and application to policy making and problem solving *Team Building in Ch8 will be re-conceptualised to cover working collaboratively as a team at service level, multi disciplinary teams and integrated service provision through multi agency working.
Jillian Rodd is an educational and developmental psychologist. She was a senior academic at the University of Plymouth and also at the University of Melbourne and has published widely in the early childhood field throughout the world.
