Education does not always need to take place behind a desk, in a classroom or with a teacher. Family time is just as important as school time, and these 52 'Ed-ventures' provide parents with a fantastic bank of ideas to support and enhance their children's formal schooling. Each exciting adventure can easily be fitted into a weekend. Chapters include Buildings to See, Places to Go, Travel & Transport, By the Water, Country Life and Culture & Entertainment. Within each activity there is plenty of scope to help your children develop enquiring minds, including ideas on what to do before you get there, while you're there and when you get back, plus tips, suggestions and ways of encouraging different ways to learn via reading, listening, visual, sensory and physical means. Whether you're visiting a wind farm or stepping on to a train, visiting an historical building or looking at a sculpture in your local park, Learning Outdoors provides all the educational stimulation you and your children need for some great Ed-ventures in the open air.

About Author

TIM and KERRY MEEK, teachers from Nottingham, are just regular parents striving to bring up their two daughters, Amy (11) and Ella (9), as best they can. Their approach to parenting is one full of love and care, but one that is also deliberately punctuated with managed risk and age-appropriate challenge. This means slightly less cotton wool than the norm is used to wrap up their children, and opportunities to explore, discover and enjoy adventure and outdoor quality family time are sought and seized whenever possible. Their mantra "Adventure is out there; you just have to go and find it." is a quote that Amy expressed when she was 7 years old. It remains at the core of everything they do as a family. Tim and Kerry believe that encouraging family adventuring in the outdoors has several key benefits for all family members, but particularly the children: It promotes quality family time, leads to shared experiences, and can strengthen family bonds It helps develop important skills and competencies in children such as planning, risk assessment, collaboration and many more It promotes and encourages an interest in nature, wildlife and the natural world It presents opportunities to value and develop important personal qualities e.g. resilience, perseverance, determination, flexible thinking and problem solving It's fun and highly rewarding!
