Liberation Theology: The Paradigm Shift

By utilizing the Kuhnian theory of scientific revolutions but going beyond it to include the social and ecclesial contexts of theology-the broader historical and social realities neglected by Kuhn-this work contends that Latin American liberation theology constitutes a shift in theological paradigms. Three aspects of the cognitive nature of the liberation paradigm are discussed: theology as critical reflection on praxis, theology addressed to non-persons, and theology of and for liberation. The book advances a sociological understanding of theological knowledge.
M.D. Litonjua is Associate Professor of Sociology at College of St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio.
