Description

BR's London Midland region provided passenger services over much of England, including all the major population centres. In addition it handled vast quantities of freight traffic, ranging from minerals to manufactured products from England's industrial heartland. The region had the distinction of being the last to have steam locomotives in operation, albeit towards the end confined to the north of England; they finished completely in August 1968. Throughout the '50s and well into the '60s a wide range of motive power was to be seen - among the best known being Sir William Stanier's magnificent Coronation Pacifics and the ubiquitous 'Black 5s'. At the other end of the scale were small tank engines, built to a design first introduced in the 1870s. Throughout this period, a young Eric Sawford was on hand to record the daily life of the railways, capturing scenes that have now been lost for ever. This volume, drawn from his extensive archive and including many previously unpublished photographs, takes a look back at the London Midland region from the 1950s right through to the end of steam. It will be a treat for anyone who remembers the golden age of trainspotting, or any modeller attempting to capture the essence of this period.
