Like the most recent exhibitions curated by Daniel Birnbaum, the Art Biennale 2009 will present worlds in the making. A work of art is more than an object, he says, more than a commodity. It represents a vision of the world, and, if taken seriously, it can be seen as a way of world-making. It is Birnbaum's ambition to create a show that, although articulated into individual zones of intensity, remains fundamentally a unique exhibition.
Daniel Birnbaum is the rector of the St delschule and the director of the Exhibition Centre Portikus in Frankfurt am Main (Germany). In 2008 he was the cocurator of the Triennial of Yokohama and the curator of the 2nd Triennial of Turin. Between 2005 and 2007, he was cocurator of the Biennial of Moscow, and in 2003 he was cocurator of the international section of the 50th Venice Biennale's International Art Exhibition. He has also been a member of the committee of the International Foundation Manifesta.
