This study explores teachers' beliefs about multicultural literature and how this is reflected in classroom practice. It includes four case studies of teachers in a small Midwest School. This work will appeal to teacher educators and other scholars interested in eliminating social injustice in schools. This study explores the experience of several white English teachers teaching multicultural literature to their (predominantly) white students. Specifically, what are their beliefs about multicultural literature and their goals for its instruction, and how is this theory reflected in classroom practice? The case studies reveal that the (white) teachers see multicultural literature as an excellent vehicle for teaching their (white) students about diversity in society. However, they still privilege the traditional canon, and they often feel uncomfortable teaching literature that varies from the dominant white cultural perspective because their own experience with diversity, both personally and academically, has been extremely limited. Although the teachers attempt to discuss racial themes in the texts, the discussions lack a critical stance and remain superficial. Racism, for example, is discussed only in terms of overt individual behavior, while the more covert institutional and societal forces are ignored. Similarly, 'other' races are discussed, but whiteness and white privilege are not examined. These findings demonstrate that preservice teachers need greater preparation in multicultural education to teach multicultural literature effectively.
