About the Author
HELMUT NEWTON was born in Berlin in 1920. He passed away in Los Angeles in January 2004 in a car accident. Newton began his career at the age of 16, working for the renowned Berlin photographer, Yva. As an 18-year-old, he emigrated to Australia fleeing Nazi Germany. He returned to Europe in 1957 to settle in Paris. As of the 1980s he lived in both Monte Carlo and Los Angeles. His first solo exhibition took place in Paris in 1975. Awards for his photographic oeuvre included the German Grosse Bundesverdienstkreuz, the French Grand Prix national de la photographie and the World Image Award. The Newton Archive is now housed in Berlin. MATTHIAS HARDER is the director of the Newton Foundation in Berlin, Germany. GUILLAUME DE SARDES, is a writer, photographer, historian of art, and a curator of art and photography. He lives in France.
