Helmut Newton was in his sixties and already a well-established photographer when he and his wife moved to the French Riviera. At an age when many people would consider retirement, Newton instead plunged headfirst into one of the most prolific and liberating stages of his career. The city of Monaco was the perfect backdrop for his fashion photography, and it also provided him with a wealth of subjects for his famous portraits, including the stars of the Ballet de Monte-Carlo and the Princely Family. And it was in Monaco that Newton finally tried his hand at landscapes. While this volume focuses primarily on the years 1981 to 2004, it also looks at Newton's historic links with the Cote d'Azur and the area around Bordighera, Italy. There are essays by a range of experts in photography, film, and art and three interviews, including one with Paloma Picasso. HELMUT NEWTON was born in Berlin in 1920. He passed away in Los Angeles in January 2004 in a car accident. Newton began his career at the age of 16, working for the renowned Berlin photographer, Yva. As an 18-year-old, he emigrated to Australia fleeing Nazi Germany. He returned to Europe in 1957 to settle in Paris. As of the 1980s he lived in both Monte Carlo and Los Angeles. His first solo exhibition took place in Paris in 1975. Awards for his photographic oeuvre included the German Grosse Bundesverdienstkreuz, the French Grand Prix national de la photographie and the World Image Award. The Newton Archive is now housed in Berlin. MATTHIAS HARDER is the director of the Newton Foundation in Berlin, Germany. GUILLAUME DE SARDES, is a writer, photographer, historian of art, and a curator of art and photography. He lives in France.
