With a clear vision of the future and a lively, accessible style, Michael Sovern, former President of Columbia University, pays tribute to the great teachers who change their students forever, even as he warns that higher education is at risk. He challenges the nation to face the future with reason and courage. These eloquent excerpts from speeches delivered by Michael Sovern, one of America's outstanding educators, are accompanied by beautiful photographs of Columbia University's architecture and sculpture.
Michael I. Sovern, a scholarship student from the South Bronx, graduated summa cum laude from Columbus College and was first in his class from Columbia Law School. At age 28 he became the youngest full professor in the modern history of the university. Sovern was successively Dean of the Law School, Provost of the University, and President for 13 years.
