This outstanding work offers some proposals as to how the process of replacing the super-sessionary theology in Christianity might be further advanced to build on the constructive efforts by theologians in rethinking the Church's relationship with Judaism. The Patristic Era saw the development in the church of a theological outlook on the Christian-Jewish relationship that would generate great misery and marginalization for the Jewish People in Christian-dominated societies. St. Augustine was one of the prominent Church Fathers responsible for what has become known as "the against the Jews" theological tradition. Augustine argued by refusing to accept Jesus as the long anticipated Jewish messiah, Jews relinquished their membership in a convenantal relationship with God. The Christian community replaced Jews in the covenantal relationship. This came to be known as super-sessionist theology. It also included the notion, popularized by Augustine that Jews were to serve as a "witness people." They were not to be exterminated in Nazi fashion but were to be relegated to a life of misery and statelessness as a warning to others of the consequences of rejecting Christ.
This theology would largely remain in place until the II Vatican Council where in its document on the Church's relationship to non-Christian religions Nostra Aetate Catholicism repudiated its claim of Jewish covenantal expulsion for the murder of Jesus and hence totally undercut the basis for the prevailing super-sessionist theology.
