John W Mills PPRBS ARCA FRSA studied at the Hammersmith School of Art before continuing his training at the Royal College of Art. He taught sculpture for nearly two decades before stopping in 1977 to become a full-time sculptor. He was elected President of The Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1986 and 1997. His major commissions have included a monument to The Women of World War II in Whitehall, Westminster  and the National Firefighters Memorial Blitz in St Paul's, London . He designed and made the D-Day 50 pence piece for the Royal Mint, which was voted best coin of 1994.
