DescriptionThe early modern period saw the emergence and proliferation of diaries and autobiographies written by both men and women. Although autobiographical texts have been written before that time, the late sixteenth and especially the seventeenth centuries was the first time that so many diaries and autobiographies were produced. Despite the growing interest in early modern women's writings and lives, their personal writings still have not yet received the attention they deserve and several of them still remain unavailable to a wider reading public. This book aims to unearth the forgotten and marginalized personal writings of women in the seventeenth century, and to illustrate firstly, the reasons that explain their emergence; secondly, the influences that molded them and thirdly, their contribution to the formation of the autobiographical tradition.
