Strategic Survey is the Institute's annual review and, to a lesser degree, projection of strategic developments throughout the world. Since 1966, it has been the essential one-volume analytical encapsulation of the year's key events in international relations. The interplay of political developments and the actual or potential use of military force remain Strategic Survey's chief concerns, but its broad scope also embraces economic globalisation and other aspects of the post-modern world. Strategic Survey opens with Perspectives , an assessment of the effect of major events and trends on the strategic landscape, followed by a chapter examining strategic policy issues. The bulk of the book covers the year's major developments in international affairs, organised within regional chapters. Strategic Survey concludes with Prospectives, an essay setting forth strategic priorities for the coming year. Also included are over 30 pages of maps depicting strategically important activity and political change.
The IISS is an independent, internationally staffed centre for research, information, and debate on the problems of security, conflict and conflict prevention in the contemporary world. Its work is grounded in an appreciation of the various political, economic, and social problems that can lead to instability as well as the factors that can lead to international co-operation. The council and staff of the Institute are international and its membership is drawn from over 90 countries.
