Description

This book demonstrates the value of using of data to inform our understanding of student success. In this study, the researcher proposed that undergraduate students who engaged themselves in non-cognitive activities within an institutional climate are more likely to be academically successful. Implications for student affairs professionals and future direction of research are discussed. The relationship between students' engagement trends and academic outcome (GPA) were examined by using a sample of 355 freshmen students and 315 senior students attending Norfolk State University during spring of 2006. The rates of engagement were assessed using the web-base National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Demographic variables such as, parents' educational level, residence, and gender were also examined to determine whether they explained the variances found in undergraduate students' academic outcome. The results from this study suggest that students' academic success within the institutional environment is motivated by the interactions they have with faculty members, administrators and peers. Implications for student affairs professionals and future direction of research are discussed.
