This work synthesizes the history of six western states by examining the historical forces that made the West what it is today. It examines population movements and development patterns, the consequences of geography and climate, and the impact of changes in the technologies of transportation.
Earl Pomeroy's major works include in Search of the Golden West and The Territories and the United States. Pomeroy taught at the University of Oregon for a quarter-century, until accepting an appointment at the University of San Diego, where he remained for a decade until his retirement in 1984. He returned to Eugene. Oregon, where he is now professor emeritus of history.
