Description

This study examines the current situation of the Celtic languages in Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It demonstrates how, over a significant period of time, they shifted under pressure from the domination of English from monolingualism to bilingualism. This book describes the activities of individuals, organizations, institutions and governments to promote the Celtic languages. It collects together, classifies and analyses these activities. Following a statement of the aims, objectives and methodology underpinning the thesis, there are separate chapters dealing with the situation in each country, together with a description of the societies and institutions involved in maintaining and promoting the minority language. The information is then evaluated and conclusions are drawn about what constitutes best practice and what appears to be the prospect of survival of the three languages. This work concludes with an Appendix containing the interviews given in response to a request for an expression of views on the effectiveness of the promotion by leading figures in the domain.
