Description

This work provides not only a translation of the Latin writings of Michael Servetus but also an excellent introduction and penetrating notes that contextualize the original writings. This volume also offers a detailed account of the two trials to which Michael Servetus was submitted, first in Vienne by the French Inquisition and then fatally in Geneva by Calvin's instigation. Michael Servetus (1511-1553), the exiled Spanish rebellious theologian and reformer, was just twenty when he published in France two consecutive little books that radically revolutionized the traditional dogmatic thinking of the Christian faith. In them, he demonstrated that the belief in a tri-une God was an unwarranted pseudo-philosophical addition to the pure simplicity of the gospels and the original tradition, and furthermore, he proposed to purify other Christian fundamental believes, such as the concept and practice of institutional and personal justification by giving primacy to the divine transformation operated by baptism accepted with full responsibility, and to charitas - love - as reflected in good actions.
