Description

This study is the first in-depth comparative textual analysis of the first two novels by feminist French-Canadian writer Michele Mailhot (1932-2009). This pioneering study helps place the work of this innovative author in the corpus of Quebec literature. This study examines works that were published at the time when a distinctly Quebec literature was emerging. "Dis-moi que je vis" (1964) and "Le Portique" (1967) both portray a protagonist-narrator named Josee living in Montreal. Applying Genette's structural narratological theory, this book examines both novels to elicit their narrative characteristics and interpret the effects created. Furthermore, using a new model, this study combines aspects of semantics and narratology to show how characters are constructed. The analysis reveals a distinct and meaningful overarching structure for each of the novels, unveiling how the narrative underpins the semantics. It identifies previously undetected elements and effects, which are sometimes paradoxical and often relate to the protagonist and humour. The method also makes possible a distinction between Josee-protagonist and Josee-narrator. The texts are evaluated to ascertain where they fit ideologically and within the Quebec literary context. The conclusion looks at the paradoxical aspects of both novels as well as the paradoxes surrounding Mailhot's writings. This book will appeal to readers interested in Michele Mailhot, Quebec literature, characterization and narratological analysis.
