DescriptionIn addition to analyzing Perse's later poems, this work also gives an account of Perse's personal understanding of poetry. The analyses follow the poems closely, strophe by strophe, section by section, from the first of these poems Chronique, to the last published poems in the Mediterranean Cycle, Secheresse and underscores the main tenants of Perse's poetry. This work has two main objectives. It purports to analyze the later poems of Saint-john Perse, poems from what is referred to as the Mediterranean cycle of his work, but it also attempts to underscore the main tenants of Perse's poetry. The analyses follow the poems closely, strophe by strophe, section by section, from the first of these poems Chronique, to the last published poem, Secheresse. In addition to interpreting Perse's poems, however, the analyses are conducted from a certain perspective. They also attempt to underscore the importance of Nietzsche's thought for Perse. Many expressions and images in the poems are more easily understandable when read in this perspective. So much so that it would seem that Nietzsche's though is not only a leitmotiv for Perse but constitutes a directing principle. Following each analysis a short conclusion highlights the main points of the poem. In this respect, Chronique is a poem about desire, Oiseaux is about representation in art and language, Chante pour celle qui fut la together with Chant pour un equinoxe constitute an ontology of love, while Nocturne and Secheresse, in addition to giving poetic form to the notion of an eternal return, celebrate the unending nature of poetic and artistic inspiration. In addition to analyzing Perse's later poems, this work also gives an account of Perse's understanding of poetry. The Annex presents and discusses some of the writers and poets that Perse himself read and appreciated. According to the marks that he made in the margins of works, and passages that he underlined, etc., it is possible to gain an understanding of Perse's own thoughts on poetry.
